Barcelona is the second largest city in Spain in terms of population, economy and activities. Located on the Mediterranean coast, it is crossed by Llobregat and Besòs rivers and bordered on the west by the Serra de Collserola which rises to 512 meters (top: Tibidabo).
It is considered as a global city because of its importance in the fields of finance, international trade, publishing, arts, entertainment and media. Barcelona is therefore a major economic center with one of the main Mediterranean ports and the second largest Spanish airport behind Madrid-Barajas.
Having been founded by the Romans, the city became the capital of the counts of Barcelona then one of the major cities of the Crown of Aragon and, after, the capital of the Principality of Catalonia. Redesigned several times during its history, it is today a major tourist destination and enjoys a unique cultural heritage. The Güell Palace (in 1984), Casa Milà, Park Güell, the Palace of Catalan Music and the Hospital of Sant Pau are also on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
