Historical
Originally, pagan festival, Carnival takes place before the Lent period, during the fat days (Tuesday-fat). This is the last party before a period of abstinence and lean cuisine, which justifies all the excesses. It was at the Belle-Epoque that the Carnival of Nice reached its peak: it was then the largest carnival in the world. The Carnival marks the end of the azure winter, under an often radiant sun and loudly expurgate the past, the good and bad times of the past year just for fun!
Since the beginning of this decade, the influence of Brazilian, Caribbean and Latin American carnivals on the European and Scandinavian carnivals has been undeniable. Participation in the Carnival of Nice, a real international crossroads, of Carnival groups from around the world allows the discovery of the richness, dynamism and music of other Carnivals. As a result, samba schools, steel-band orchestras and salsa are gradually replacing the old marches and farandoles.
The festival is immersed in this mix of cultures that needs new means of expression. Once again, the Nice Carnival Crafstmen have given free rein to their creativity and used their talents as builders to bring you floats that are even more spectacular, funny and mocking floats and no one is spared.
The flower parades delight the visitors with colours and scents and dazzle them with the costumes created for the occasion.
